DUAL VISION
Betty Brownlee + Cristin Richard
A Critique of Jean-Luc Godard, 2020-21
Mixed media installation
Betty Brownlee and Cristin Richard share a deep passion for French culture and Detroit’s historical connection to it. They were both drawn to French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, for his distinct style. Together, they embarked on an in-depth critique of his films from the 1960s. They found that his content reflects polarized thoughts relating to gender dynamics, culture, politics, and commercialism- all of which parallel many issues of our current day. Through a deconstruction of Godard’s work, Brownlee and Richard have reinterpreted the iconic French cinematic experience into an installation that combines the mastery of their own mediums.
