Join us for an exclusive screening of award-winning writer and filmmaker dream hampton’s powerful new documentary, It Was All A Dream, followed by an intimate conversation and Q&A led by Jova Lynne, MOCAD co-director & artistic director.
A visual memoir reflecting on the dawn of the golden era of hip-hop from hampton’s personal archives, It Was All A Dream takes viewers inside the studio with intimate access to some of rap’s most celebrated minds. From hampton’s neighbor The Notorious BIG, to Wu Tang’s Method Man, Mobb Deep, Snoop Dogg, and many more, the film celebrates a phenomenal era in hip-hop history.

dream hampton is an award-winning filmmaker and writer from Detroit. For two decades her essays and cultural criticism helped shape a generation. Her most recent works include the award winning short film “Freshwater” (NYT OpDocs/PBS, 2023) and “Ladies First” (Netflix, 2023). Selected works include “Treasure” (Frameline, 2015), “Finding Justice” (BET, 2019), “It’s A Hard Truth Ain’t It” (HBO, 2019) and the Emmy nominated “Surviving R. Kelly” (Netflix, 2019), which broke rating records and earned her a Peabody Award. In 2019, hampton was named one of TIME 100’s most influential people in the world.
JOVA LYNNE is a practicing artist, curator, and the inaugural Artistic Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), co-leading the institution alongside the Chief Operating Officer, Marie Ann Madison-Patton. Lynne first joined the institution in 2017 as a Ford Foundation Curatorial Fellow and in 2019 became the Susanne Field Hilberry Senior Curator. Before MOCAD, Lynne was Director at Temple Contemporary at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Contemporary Art and Architecture. Lynne worked in the education departments of the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, New York and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. Lynne graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Arts with her M.F.A. in Photography in 2017. Lynne’s artwork can be found in the collections of Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan, and The Wedge Collection in Toronto, Canada, amongst others.
