Music From Dimensions Tomorrow

Elliott Bergman, Bell Trees from “Resonant Body” at Shane Campbell Gallery, 2020. Courtesy of the artist.

Presented alongside MOCAD’s residency program, The Sounding Room, the group exhibition Music from Dimensions Tomorrow explores visionary sound practices, outsider aesthetics, and experimental music cultures in Michigan from the 1990s to the present. Curated by Gretchen Gonzales Davidson and developed in dialogue with the residency program, the exhibition brings together artists working across music, performance, visual art, noise, and improvisation.

Music from Dimensions Tomorrow features homemade instruments, photographs, recordings, posters, publications, and archival materials connected to influential artists and scenes, including Faruk Z. Bey, Elliott Bergman, Davin Brainard, Warren Defever, Yoko Ono’s historic visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the spiritual and experimental legacies of Alice Coltrane and Yusef Lateef.

This presentation traces how experimental music scenes function not only as sonic movements but as communities built through collaboration, self-determination, and alternative ways of creating and sharing culture.
