KENNEDY YANKO: TILTED LIFT

Tilted Lift features an outdoor sculpture commissioned for The Monumental Tour, a traveling exhibition series contributing objects to the public realm that tell a more honest and representative story of our shared history. This addition to the tour creates space for manifestations of Black culture that extend beyond resistance. Tilted Lift opens a dialogue on the politics of representation within a city.

TILTED LIFT

MARCH 17 – MAY 14, 2023

MIKE KELLEY’S MOBILE HOMESTEAD LAWN

MOCAD is honored to partner with Kindred Arts to present the debut of Kennedy Yanko’s newest work, Tilted Lift, on the Mike Kelley Mobile Homestead  lawn. This special exhibition features an outdoor sculpture commissioned for The Monumental Tour, a traveling exhibition series contributing objects to the public realm that tell a more honest and representative story of our shared history. This addition to the tour creates space for manifestations of Black culture that extend beyond resistance. Tilted Lift  opens a dialogue on the politics of representation within a city.

With this presentation at MOCAD, Yanko will join the legacy of acclaimed American artists presented by The Monumental Tour  which includes Arthur Jafa, Coby Kennedy, Christopher Myers, and Hank Willis Thomas. Yanko’s contribution, a nearly 10 ft composition of salvaged and repositioned steel joined with paint skin—a sumptuous, bodily material that points back to Yanko’s beginnings as a painter—connotes a particular tenderness heightened by the context of Detroit’s industrial and manufacturing legacy.

Tilted Lift  is curated by Marsha Reid of Kindred Arts, a cultural equity initiative.
