Modular Origami: Exploring the Sonobe Unit
Workshops
Thursday, November 19, 2026
6pm – 8pm
Join local arts facilitator and community organizer, Maiya Felan, for a hands-on introduction to modular origami. Learn to fold the Sonobe unit and connect folded paper pieces into three-dimensional geometric sculptures without glue. Through guided instruction and experimentation, explore color, pattern, and structure, and leave with a small sculpture and instructions to continue creating at home.
Maiya “Lulu” Felan is an arts facilitator and community worker known for her work in Detroit’s underground music scene as a member of the collective that operates the Trumbullplex Micro-Community, as a co-founder of the DJ education program, Homie Hangz, which received the Spirit of Detroit Award, and as a former event coordinator at Underground Music Academy.
Though she tends to keep her personal art practices private, Maiya has long been a visual, sculptural, and literary artist, first learning origami from her childhood art teacher nearly two decades ago. A deeply meditative art practice, origami has brought Maiya joy and peace throughout her life; she hopes to share some of that joy and peace with others through teaching.
