Bree Gant: Wend
bree gant, Wend, 2022, Video still from work-in-progress dance film meditation. Featuring dancers Celia Benvenutti, Nahimana Aponi, and bree gant, shot by bree gant. Courtesy of the artist.
Wend is a multi-channel video installation that compiles nearly a decade’s worth of multidisciplinary artist bree gant’s auto-ethnographic recordings. Hailing from the Westside of Detroit, gant’s practice is grounded in the comprehensive study of time and movement. Movement of the body, groups of people, and time are embodied fluidly through their performance, photography, sound, and video work. Wend captures mobility both ritualized and lived out on their daily commute on buses and sidewalks of the Motor City. Throughout the exhibition run, dancers and musicians or practitioners of time will activate the installation – utilizing it as a rehearsal space and inviting visitors into their process as performance.
