Detroit is in the midst of a charter revision, and this is our opportunity to shape the city charter in a way that supports accessibility for all of us. The Focus Group for People with Disabilities, an officially recognized focus group of the charter revision commission, is dedicated to bringing forth a proposal that people with different needs can not only support, but see tangible results from. To accomplish this, the Focus Group for People with Disabilities will host two open mic events, in partnership with MOCAD, open to people with disabilities and their allies. Whether you have a story or ideas for what the charter should include, we invite you to come and share them on the mic. Your ideas and stories will inform the work of the Focus Group for People with Disabilities in advocating for a city charter that realizes the needs of our community, through improved planning and infrastructure, which is fully inclusive of people with disabilities.
This is an all ages event. Youth with disabilities and their allies are especially encouraged to attend and share their stories. We encourage attendees to avoid the use of strongly scented perfumes and lotions prior to entering the museum. ASL interpretation will be provided. A variety of seating options will also be available, including chairs, couches, and reserved spaces for wheelchairs. Accessible entry to MOCAD is available through the front door of the museum. Restrooms are also wheelchair accessible.
This event is supported by Collective for Disability Justice, Detroit Disability Power, and Warriors on Wheels.
