Music lovers and collector’s alike, join MOCAD for a two-part Live Listening Session in correlation The Listening Archive Exhibition located in Mike Kelly’s Mobile Homestead.
Detroit visual and performing artist Ben Hall plays from his curated collection, Bap-Tizum.com; a survey of Black-American Christian spiritual music & sermons from the 1930’s to the 1908’s and the world’s largest online Black American spiritual collection.
Guests are encouraged to bring examples of their favorite music to join in on the session!
The Listening Archive is a sound and oral history music project that documents musicians and composers across musical genres and generations, discussing what they think about and listen for when they listen to music. Founded in 2009 by information artist and architect Laura Foxman, The Listening Archive has been realized in collaboration with filmmakers and sound recorders from Detroit, and across the country. Participants include Leon Fleisher, Jon Hendricks, Lenny Kaye, Missy Mazzoli, Stephin Merritt, Suni Paz, Dave Portner (Animal Collective, Avey Tare), and Pete Seeger among numerous others.
